Absolutely awesome!
Last night was a huge night and I am so happy that I was a part of it. I cannot imagine going to Mardi Gras now and not being part of the parade. I just don't think it would be the same. The parade itself had over 6000 participants and Oxford St was a sea of glamour and sequins. The theme for this years parade was "The History of the World" and many of the floats were themed. There were costumes from Egypt, Asia and all around the world. Gladiators were a particular favorite amongst the paraders.
The Lifesavers with Pride routine was shorter than in previous years but no less challenging. By the time we reach the end of the parade route we were exhausted. This year as part of our float we had a reel in the center of the formation. It was the size of a small car and was a fantastic site as it spun around in Taylors square.
It is hard to describe the energy of the parade and of the crowd. It is almost like your whole body is alive with electricity. I have never experienced anything that even approaches the high that I get as I dance down the street at Mardi Gras.
This year we were near the front of the parade and the crowds energy was overwhelming.
One thing that I noticed this year was the number of locals who had come out to watch the parade. There is always a strong international presence but this year I saw a lot of familiar faces in the crowd.
The Sydney Mardi Gras Festival really is a fantastic event and if you ever get the chance I would love to see you all down here next year!
After the parade is was time to head off to the Carnival. This year the main party which usually happens after the parade was moved to next weekend and so this year a smaller after parade celebration was held at Fox Studios. I was a little suspicious about how successful this event would be but I have to say it was a success. I still feel that the main party needs to be after the parade but the carnival was a great idea because we were given access to the grassed show ring. This was fantastic! It gave everybody a place to have a bite to eat and sit and chat. The atmosphere was very chilled out and a great way to have a break after the march. If anyone on the Mardi Gras board is reading this please keep the main party after the parade but I would definitely suggest that the show ring be made available at future Mardi Gras parties. It was such a fantastic space.
It was in the show ring that we all gathered to hear the awards being announced. I am pleased to report that the Lifesavers with Pride took out the Judges Choice and best float award!
After the announcements it was time have a dance and check out the talent.
And so 24 hours after leaving the house I stumbled through the door and now after writing this update I think its time to have a sleep.
I am still on a high from such an amazing night...
Happy Mardi Gras everyone!
